Council thanks emergency services and community for fire response

Pyrenees Shire Council has thanked emergency services and residents for their outstanding efforts during the Bayindeen fire emergency as it prepares to start recovery efforts with impacted communities.
A large part of the Pyrenees Shire has been impacted by a major bushfire that started on Thursday 22 February.
The fire is now under control but there may still be some localised fire activity and smoke. Aircraft, heavy machinery, and firefighters will still be active in the impacted areas.
Pyrenees Shire Mayor Cr Robert Vance said he could not thank emergency services enough for their incredible work over the past week, as well as Council staff for their ongoing efforts in assisting emergency relief.
"An astounding amount of effort has gone into keeping our community safe over the past week, especially in the lead up to the dangerous conditions on Wednesday,” said Cr Vance. “On behalf of Council, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those involved.”
Council is working closely with State Government agencies to establish a Fire Recovery Team to help impacted residents access financial support, look after their physical and mental health, reinstate damaged and destroyed infrastructure and access other recovery resources.
Pyrenees Shire Mayor Cr Robert Vance said the Fire Recovery Team would work closely with relevant agencies and ensure the community received the support they need to get back on their feet.
“Our team is dedicated to collaborating closely with relevant agencies to ensure that our community receives the comprehensive support it needs," said Cr Vance.
Cr Vance also thanked the community for their patience with disrupted Council services such as delays to waste collection.
“Some fire-impacted areas remain unsafe for our contractors to access but we are working with them to get our waste collections back on track,” Cr Vance said. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work to get our services back to normal.”
As part of initial recovery steps, Council has extended the due date for rates payment or installments due in February to 31 March 2024. Outstanding amounts will not be charged interest during this time.

Avoca and Beaufort Resource Centres are open to the community this weekend, March 2 and 3. The Beaufort Centre is open from 9am to 3pm and Avoca is open from 10am to 1pm. Council’s Mobile library is also running again next week.
